From Startup to $89 Million: Lessons on Scaling

Learning real-time how to scale a business to $90M+

Introduction

Over the past decade, I’ve had the privilege of working with a wide range of businesses — helping them sharpen their brands, expand their reach, and unlock growth they didn’t think was possible. One of the most impactful examples of this work was my long-term partnership with Red Rock Secured, a gold and silver investment company that I supported for more than seven years.

When we began working together, the founder was renting a a desk in a co-working space in LA and Red Rock was doing roughly $250,000 - $500,000 in revenue. Through consistent branding, marketing, and design support, they grew to more than $90 million annually, earning features in publications like Inc. and Fortune and an appearance with their own sponsored NASCAR™.

While the company ultimately faced challenges unrelated to my work — namely, fraudulent activity on the sales side that led to their shutdown — my role focused on helping build and communicate a trusted brand. That journey carries lessons for any business leader looking to scale.

Building a Brand Foundation

When I first engaged with Red Rock, they were a small team with ambition but without a cohesive identity. We started with the fundamentals:

  • Logo + Visual Identity: Designed a mark and system that communicated stability, trust, and longevity — all essential in the precious metals market.
  • Web Presence: Built multiple websites over the years to keep pace with growth, balancing compliance needs with strong conversion performance.
  • Messaging Framework: Clarified their story so potential investors could understand not only what they did, but why it mattered.
  • Employee Training: To ensure ongong compliance and regulatory efforts R&D helped design and implement a new hire and ongoing training modules for all positions at Red Rock Secured.
Scaling Visibility

As revenue grew, so did the opportunities to build credibility:

  • High-Profile Features: Collaborated on campaigns that positioned Red Rock in Inc. and Fortune, reinforcing their legitimacy in a crowded industry.
  • Unique Campaigns: Extended the brand into bold activations, including wrapping a NASCAR car to connect with a national audience.
  • Iterative Marketing: Refined campaigns constantly, ensuring every dollar spent contributed to measurable growth.
  • Old Fashioned Mail: One of our biggest success was being abe to design & produce high quality printed sales and marketing collateral that spoke volumes to their audience.
The Results

The outcome of this sustained effort speaks for itself:

  • Growth from $500k to $90M+ in annual revenue.
  • Brand recognition that placed Red Rock alongside the biggest players in the industry.
  • A case study in how consistent branding and marketing execution can multiply business value.
A Note on Integrity

It’s important to acknowledge that despite these successes, Red Rock’s story didn’t end well. Certain individuals on the sales side engaged in fraudulent activity, which ultimately led to the company’s closure. You can read all about it on the SEC's website or maybe in a future article sueing, being sued, and the legal realities business owners don't often talk about.

That’s not something to hide — it’s a reminder of how fragile trust is in any business. The marketing and brand work was sound, but when integrity falters in other areas, the entire company is put at risk.

Key Lessons for Leaders
  1. Brand matters: Even in industries built on trust and compliance, thoughtful branding and design can be a growth multiplier.
  2. Consistency compounds: A strong logo, evolving websites, credible press, and bold campaigns create momentum that builds year after year.
  3. Integrity is non-negotiable: No amount of growth or visibility can compensate for a lack of ethics. The strongest brands are built on both great marketing and great character.
Conclusion

My years with Red Rock Secured remain one of the clearest examples of how smart branding and marketing can fuel explosive growth. The experience reinforced my conviction that businesses don’t just need a great product or service — they need a clear identity, consistent execution, and a foundation of trust.

At The R&D Dept., those are the principles I bring to every client partnership.
